A two-story light-colored house with horizontal siding, a covered front porch with white railings and columns, flanked by green trees and shrubs, with a concrete walkway leading to a wet sidewalk and street.

Sizing a mini-split for Kent County starts with what the compressor is actually asked to do here. Homes in Kent County, RI run cooling about two months a year, from July through August. The compressor, the condenser fan, and the contactor all sit idle for most of the calendar, and long idle periods let small installation faults hide. A refrigerant charge that is slightly off, a line set that was bent too tight, a bracket that shifts through freeze-thaw cycles: none of those announce themselves until the unit starts up again under load. A contractor quoting a new install has to get the refrigerant charge and the line routing right the first time, because the short season gives a marginal install room to conceal itself.

Most houses in this county were wired for appliances and heating equipment that drew far less than what a modern mini-split installation requires. Half the homes in Kent County, Rhode Island were built in 1967 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor sizing a new system has to open the electrical panel and check whether the existing service can carry the added load, and in stock from this era, the answer is often that it cannot without an upgrade. The ductwork question is separate, since mini-splits are ductless, but the electrical one is real and it shows up in the quote before the unit is ever ordered.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What HVAC Installation Involves

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit, with a sofa and table inside the room.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being conditioned. It is the piece a homeowner sees every day, and it is where conditioned air enters the living space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or on a wall bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the coil that release or absorb heat.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to move moisture out of the house, and a dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit from the panel.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each component is positioned and routed in your home.
